Hotham SOTA Summit 2024

23rd & 24th March, 2024

In early January Peter, VK3PF, posted to the Ozsota groups looking for expressions of interest in a summit activation weekend based at Mt Hotham. Mt Hotham is in the Victorian high country. The area has lots of summits including many that are high enough to earn the maximum of 10 points. Peter, VK3PWG, alerted me to the post. Whilst really not knowing what to expect, we both signed up.

We ended up activating eleven summits earning 96 activation points. Almost doubling the points I’ve earned over the last eight years. Giving me a total 213 points at the end of the weekend.

Friday was the drive from home to Hotham. I had planned to activate Mt Glenrowan, VK3/VE-230, on the way up, not realising that it was a 5km walk from where you have to park the car. We didn’t have time for that unfortunately.

On Saturday I travelled in Peter, VK3PF’s 4WD. Accompanied by Alan, VK3XE and Gerrard, VK2IO. Five summits were visited.

  • Blue Rag Range, VK3/VE-015. 10 points
  • Basalt Knob, VK3/VE-039. 10 points
  • White Timber, VK3/VE-060. 8 points
  • VK3/VT-018. 8 points
  • Mt Blue Rag, VK3/VE-021. 10 points

Then back to ‘The General’ for a well earned dinner and chat with the rest of the group.

Sunday the travelling group was the same. After a drive through Omeo and a fair way further east another five summits were activated.

  • VK3VG009, VK3/VG-009. 10 points
  • Mt Pendergast, VK3/VG-022. 8 points
  • Brumby Hill, VK3/VG-012. 10 points
  • Mt Nunniong, VK3/VG-011. 10 points
  • Mt Nugong, VK3/VG-018. 8 points
  • Mt Wombat, VK3/VU-002. 4 points

Monday was the drive home. With some advice from the group we were able to find a summit that was more or less on the way back and an easy drive up. Mt Wombat, VK3/VU-002, earning an additional 4 points.

Huge thanks to Peter, VK3PF and Brian, VK3BCM, for organising the weekend.
